What happened in AI in October 2026?

The first half of October 2026 changed what an AI answer looks like and what an AI agent can do. OpenAI rolled out GPT-6 with Intelligent UI to every ChatGPT tier, so answers can now include charts, forms and interactive comparisons. OpenAI's DevDay gave agents computer use and persistent tasks. Google released Gemini 4 Argon with aggressive introductory pricing. Anthropic shipped Claude Haiku 5.5, took Docs, Slides and Design out of beta and offered startups a free year of Claude Team.

OpenAI: GPT-6 makes answers interactive

OpenAI announced GPT-6 and Intelligent UI for everyone in ChatGPT. Responses can include visuals, buttons, forms and charts, with the format chosen to fit the question: a side-by-side layout for a comparison, an interactive diagram for an explanation. OpenAI's help article notes that these capabilities depend on the app and the effort setting and can be switched off.

For buyers, this makes ChatGPT a more natural place to compare vendors. A comparison shown as a table puts your price, features and fit next to competitors'. If those facts are missing or vague, you appear as a blank cell. Our AI search news for October covers what this means for brand visibility.

OpenAI DevDay: agents that use software

InfoQ's DevDay recap lists the main developer news: GPT-6.1 Sol, computer use in the Agents API, Codex running in the cloud, a Decisions API in limited preview, richer ChatGPT plugins and Dots, persistent agents for ongoing tasks. A shared workspace called ChatGPT Space lets teams and agents work from common context.

The practical shift is from "ask and copy" to "delegate and review". Agents that operate graphical interfaces can fill forms, update tools and complete multi-step tasks. That raises the value of clear processes, permissions and audit trails, the themes of why AI agents need guardrails.

Google: Gemini 4 Argon and the Gemini agent

Google introduced Gemini 4 Argon on October 13 for developers, enterprises and paid Gemini subscribers, including AI Mode in Search for Pro and Ultra subscribers. Google lists an introductory API price of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens until November 30, 2026, then $4 and $20. Benchmark results in the post are Google's own claims.

Days earlier, at Gemini at Work, Google introduced the Gemini agent, a work agent that plans tasks and connects to business systems. Teams on Google Workspace and Google Cloud should expect agent features to arrive inside tools they already pay for.

Anthropic: cheaper models and documents for everyone

Anthropic's release notes list Claude Haiku 5.5 on October 7, described as its cheapest, fastest and most capable small model, and monthly API credits for Max and Team plans. Anthropic also took Docs, Slides and Design out of beta on every plan and opened Dashboards and Motion in beta. TechCrunch reported an expanded startup programme with a free year of Claude Team and $1,000 in API credits for eligible companies.

What should business teams do this month?

Three actions follow from October's news.

1. Budget for usage, not seats. Agent work is increasingly priced by consumption. Set spending limits and track cost per completed task. 2. Prepare the facts agents read. Agents and visual answers compare prices, services and proof. Start with the agent-ready checklist. 3. Pick one workflow to delegate. Choose a repetitive, reviewable task and pilot an agent with human approval before scaling.
