Choose one customer task and make its destination page genuinely useful. The October 15 announcement changes how links can appear in Google AI answers; it does not give businesses a guaranteed placement or a new markup trick.
What changed in Google AI search?
Google announced more prominent routes from AI answers to websites on October 15, 2026. Here is the practical difference between the changes, according to its announcement:
| Change | Announced status | Reader benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Links inside answers | Increasing; higher placement rolling out | Open a supporting page while reading. |
| Official-site section | Testing | Reach a specific page needed for a task. |
| Timely article carousels | Expanding locations and languages | Find current reporting and preferred publishers. |
| Related-article links | More prominent design | Explore a subject further. |
| Creator names on video results | Testing in AI Mode | Learn about a creator through their Search profile. |
The announcement does not establish a traffic increase for an individual business. A link being easier to see still leaves a choice: does the reader have a reason to open it?
Which business pages are worth improving?
Improve the page that helps a customer finish a real task. Our recommendation is to start with an unanswered buying question, then make the answer and its next step easy to find. This is an editorial priority, not a ranking formula announced by Google.
Pricing and inclusions
Explain what a price covers, what costs extra and when a quote is necessary. If prices vary, give the factors and conditions instead of an unexplained “contact us.”
Services and availability
Describe the work you actually provide, your service area, eligibility and important exclusions. A reader should know whether you can help before making an enquiry.
Booking and enquiries
State what happens after someone books or submits a request. Check the link, explain required information and put relevant cancellation or scheduling conditions nearby.
Support and policies
Make current instructions, returns, changes and contact options easy to locate. Link to the maintained policy rather than repeating different versions across your site.
You can usually do this inside your existing site. For a broader content plan, see the page types buyers need; for pricing examples, read pricing pages AI agents can read.
What would a useful improvement look like?
A useful page resolves the question that brought the reader there. Consider a hotel guest checking whether a late arrival is possible. A slogan about hospitality does not tell that guest what to do.
Customer question: “Can I check in after midnight?”
“Enjoy a seamless arrival and exceptional service throughout your stay.”
“Yes. Reception is staffed 24 hours. If you expect to arrive after midnight, send your booking reference and estimated arrival time before 6 p.m. on your arrival day. Use the main entrance and ring the night bell. A late arrival does not extend your checkout time.”
These conditions are invented to illustrate page structure. A hotel should publish only its real, approved policy.
The revised answer covers availability, the required action and an important limit. A hotel could publish it on a maintained arrival page and link to it from booking information. That improves the customer journey even if no AI system cites it.
The same exercise works for a restaurant with dietary requests, a software platform with plan limits or a service business with restricted coverage. Ask what the customer needs to decide, write the verified answer and provide a direct next step.
What can you do in 30 minutes?
Use one short session to improve one page. Resist spreading small wording changes across every URL before you know which customer question you are solving.
- Minutes 0–5: choose a question. Take a real question from enquiries, sales calls or support. Pick one that affects whether a customer can proceed.
- Minutes 5–10: find the current answer. Search your own site. Note the URL, missing facts and any contradictory prices or conditions.
- Minutes 10–20: rewrite and verify. Put the direct answer near the start. Add conditions, a concrete next step and a link to the relevant policy. Ask the responsible person to confirm the facts.
- Minutes 20–25: test on a phone. Read the answer without opening extra tabs. Follow the booking, pricing or support link through to the next screen.
- Minutes 25–30: record the change. Save the URL, date, question and edit. Write down which page-level metrics and enquiries you will compare later.
Do you need a new SEO or GEO strategy?
Keep a solid search foundation and focus your next improvement on useful information. Google's AI search guidance says its generative features rely on core Search systems. It does not require a special AI file or schema type, and no ideal article length is prescribed.
For a business owner, the practical brief is simple: let people and search systems reach the important page, explain the offer accurately and maintain the facts. Use structured data where appropriate to describe what is actually visible. Adding labels around vague claims will not make the underlying answer more helpful.
Our AI visibility vs SEO guide explains the overlap. This article focuses on choosing a useful destination after Google's link changes; it is not a general roundup of October's AI launches.
How will you know whether it helped?
Track page performance and customer outcomes separately. Record the date of your edit and compare equivalent periods where possible. A seasonal change, different query mix or another website update can also affect the result.
- Search visibility: relevant queries, page impressions, clicks and click-through rate in Search Console. Consider position and query intent when interpreting CTR.
- AI observations: save the question, date, market, answer and cited URL when checking Google AI experiences. One appearance is an observation, not a stable placement.
- Business value: completed bookings, qualified enquiries or fewer avoidable support questions. Preserve the evidence available for the source of each visit.
Use your site's own data to judge progress. Neither a cover image nor this Google announcement supports a promised click increase. For the wider news context, read our October AI search update.
