Reddit is cited often because its threads mirror how people ask AI questions (“best X for Y”), name several options, and include experiences and objections that brand pages leave out. Its data is also licensed to Google and OpenAI. Brands should read those threads, answer the recurring questions clearly on their own sites, take part transparently where rules allow, and never fake accounts, votes or reviews.
What makes a Reddit thread easy to cite?
A good thread looks like an answer already. Someone asks the same question a buyer types into ChatGPT, several people reply with named products or providers, and the discussion includes trade-offs, prices and experiences. A typical brand page, by contrast, describes one option in marketing language and rarely answers the objections a buyer actually has.
Upvotes and replies add a rough signal of agreement, not of accuracy. Answer engines still have to judge whether a thread is relevant and current — which is why an old thread can be cited next to a newer, better source.
What do the data deals with Google and OpenAI cover?
Both companies licensed access to Reddit’s data API in 2024; the exact terms were not published. Google’s expanded partnership was announced in February 2024 and widely reported at about $60 million a year; OpenAI’s partnership followed in May 2024, giving its products access to Reddit’s real-time content. The Columbia Journalism Review and Fortune covered the details.
A licence makes Reddit content easy to access and display. It does not mean every AI answer is built from Reddit, and it does not make a thread more accurate than your own documentation.
How much do AI answers rely on Reddit?
A lot, but it varies by platform, topic and study. Vendor analyses of AI citations — for example Profound’s comparison of ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity — consistently place Reddit among the most-cited domains, with different shares on each platform. These studies use their own prompt sets and methods, so treat the exact numbers as directional.
What matters is your category. Run the same buyer questions every month and record which sources appear, using a reproducible citation-tracking method. If Reddit threads dominate your answers, the section below is your plan.
What should brands do — and never do?
| Do | Don’t |
|---|---|
| Read the threads that match your buyers’ questions and note the objections | Create accounts to praise your own brand |
| Answer those questions clearly on your own site, with evidence | Buy upvotes, aged accounts or “mentions” |
| Reply transparently as the company when a subreddit allows it | Post the same promotional link across communities |
| Fix the real issue when criticism is fair | Pay or reward people for undisclosed recommendations |
Manipulation breaks Reddit’s content policy, and undisclosed paid endorsements can breach the FTC’s Endorsement Guides in the US. Beyond the rules, communities spot astroturfing quickly — and a thread exposing it can become the source an AI cites about you.
A 30-minute Reddit check for your category
Illustrative method. Pick ten questions a buyer would ask, such as “best yacht charter in Miami for a family” or “is [your category] worth it”. Search them on Reddit in your own browser and record, for each relevant thread: the date, which companies are named, the main objection, and any wrong fact about you.
- Group the recurring questions and objections.
- Map each one to a page on your site that answers it plainly — prices, inclusions, limits, proof.
- Note the competitors named most often, and why (see why AI recommends your competitors).
- Decide where a transparent reply would genuinely help.
- Repeat monthly and compare with your AI citation tracking.

Your site should answer what the thread asks.
When a Reddit thread outranks your own pages in AI answers, it is usually because it answers a question your site avoids. Close that gap first: pricing, limits, comparisons and evidence. Read how public proof beats more content, or start with a free audit.
