Summary

Clients now ask AI agents to find and compare lawyers. Publish practice areas in plain words, jurisdictions, fee structures, a clear intake path and compliant proof. Every claim must stay accurate under state advertising rules.

Can an AI agent shortlist a law firm?

Yes. A person can ask an AI assistant to find lawyers for a specific matter, compare fees and request consultations. The agent will keep firms whose public information matches the matter, the location and the budget, and set aside firms it cannot verify. For a US law firm, the question is whether your website answers those points clearly and accurately.

This guide is about publishing accurate information. It is not legal or ethics advice; check your state bar's rules before changing advertising content.

What does an agent need to match a firm to a matter?

FactThe agent's questionWhat to publish
Practice areaDoes the firm handle this type of matter?A page per practice area in plain words ("uncontested divorce", not only "family law")
JurisdictionCan the firm act in this state or court?States of admission, counties and courts served
Client typeDoes it take individuals, businesses or both?Who you represent and who you do not
FeesCan the client afford a first step?Consultation terms and how fees work (hourly, flat, contingency)
IntakeHow does the client start?A clear intake form, phone hours and response time
LanguageCan the firm serve in the client's language?Languages spoken by attorneys or staff
ProofWhy trust this firm?Attorney bios with admissions, publications and permitted reviews

How should fees be described?

Describe how fees work, not only that consultations are available. "Free 30-minute consultation; flat fees for uncontested divorces start at $1,500; contested matters billed hourly" gives an agent a comparable fact. Where you cannot give figures, explain the structure and the factors that affect it.

Every statement must be accurate and not misleading. ABA Model Rule 7.1 prohibits false or misleading communications about a lawyer's services, and its comment notes that results and endorsements can create unjustified expectations unless suitably qualified. State rules may add requirements. See pricing pages AI agents can read for wording patterns.

What should the intake path look like?

A short, labelled form with the matter type, location, contact details and preferred time, plus a statement of what happens next and when. State conflict-check and confidentiality points before the form. Do not ask for detailed confidential facts in a first web form. An agent can then submit a consultation request for the person, who confirms it, and your team qualifies it.

The general design rules are in booking and intake flows an AI agent can complete.

Why might an agent prefer another firm?

Usually because the other firm's pages answered the request more directly: it named the exact matter, listed the county, explained fees and offered a clear next step. Arrow covers the answer side of this in why AI recommends another law firm and the broader strategy in GEO for law firms.

Where should a firm start?

Take your three most valuable matter types. For each, write one page that answers the seven facts above, link it from your homepage and practice index, and keep your Google Business Profile and directory listings consistent. Then ask an agent to find a lawyer for that matter in your area and record whether you were kept.
