Short answer

Every question below reduces to the same mechanism: an AI engine will only name a company it can retrieve, identify and verify. Nothing here is a ranking trick — it is whether a machine can find your claim, understand who is making it, and check that it holds.

Being found

Why you are — or are not — in the answer

Why does ChatGPT never mention my company?

Usually because the engine cannot verify what you do.

If your category, audience and location are stated inconsistently across your site and public profiles, the model has nothing solid to attach your name to, so it names a competitor it can describe confidently instead. This is the single most common cause, and it is fixable without writing a word of new marketing copy — it is a consistency problem before it is a content problem.

Can I pay to appear in AI answers?

No. There is no ad slot inside an organic AI answer today.

Engines assemble answers from sources they can retrieve and verify, so the only durable route is to become one of those sources. Treat any vendor promising guaranteed placement as a red flag — nobody can commit to what a model will say, and we do not either.

Do I still need GEO if I already rank first on Google?

Yes. Ranking first wins the click that still happens.

When an AI Overview or a chat answer resolves the question outright, the ranking never gets seen. Those are two different surfaces, and being strong on one does not carry over to the other. Plenty of companies hold position one and are absent from the answer sitting above it. See GEO vs SEO for where the two overlap.

Does GEO work for a brand-new site with no backlinks?

It works more slowly, but it does work.

New sites win first on specific, low-competition prompts where clear, well-structured answers beat weak incumbents. Broad commercial prompts — the ones with money behind them — need external corroboration, and that takes longer to build. Start narrow and specific rather than broad and generic.

Which AI engine should I optimise for?

Optimise for retrievability and the engines follow together.

ChatGPT drives most measurable AI referral traffic today, but the underlying requirements — a clear entity, a direct answer, verifiable proof, crawlable HTML — are shared across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and AI Overviews. Engine-specific tactics age badly; the fundamentals do not.

How it works

The mechanism underneath

Is GEO just SEO with a new name?

No, though it depends on SEO.

SEO makes a page crawlable and competitive in a ranked list. GEO makes a claim liftable: a direct answer an engine can quote, backed by evidence it can check. A page can rank well and still be impossible to quote — that gap is the whole discipline.

Can AI engines actually read my site?

Not always — and this is worth checking before anything else.

Content injected by JavaScript, gated behind a form, or locked inside an image or PDF is frequently invisible to retrieval. Many sites also block AI crawlers in robots.txt without realising it. The fastest check is to view the page as raw HTML and confirm the answer is present in the text. The free GEO check does this for any URL.

Does schema markup get me cited?

Schema does not earn a citation on its own.

It removes ambiguity about what a page is, who published it and what it answers, which makes a page easier to classify and quote. It amplifies good content and cannot rescue thin content. Add it because it clarifies, not because you expect it to move a needle by itself.

What happens if an AI describes my business incorrectly?

You correct the source, not the model.

Engines paraphrase what they can retrieve, so a wrong answer usually traces to an outdated page, a stale directory listing or a contradiction between your site and your profiles. Find the source that says the wrong thing, fix it, and the answer changes on the next crawl. Chasing the model itself gets you nowhere.

Timing & proof

What to expect, and when

How long does it take to get cited by an AI engine?

Technical fixes ship in days; citations follow crawling, indexing and corroboration.

Expect first movement in four to eight weeks on low-competition prompts, and measure progress in monthly cycles rather than daily rank checks. Anyone quoting you a fixed date is guessing — the timeline depends on your crawl frequency, your market and how much evidence already exists about you.

What should I fix first?

Entity clarity, then your highest-intent page.

Make your category, audience, geography and offer unmistakable and consistent across the site and your public profiles. Then rewrite the one page tied to the prompt closest to a purchase so it answers that question in its opening lines. Two fixes, in that order, before touching anything else.

Will AI search kill my organic traffic?

It reduces volume and raises intent.

Informational queries increasingly resolve without a click, while visitors who do arrive from an AI answer have already been pre-qualified by it and convert at a substantially higher rate. Plan for fewer, better sessions — and stop reading a falling session count as a failing channel. The numbers are in our 2026 statistics report.

Can I do GEO in-house?

Yes, if someone owns it.

The work is auditing prompts, restructuring pages, adding schema, building proof and re-measuring monthly. None of it requires a specialist tool. Teams usually bring in help for the initial audit and structure, then run the monthly cycle themselves — that is the arrangement we recommend most often.

Measuring

Knowing whether it worked

How do I measure GEO when there are no clicks?

Measure the answer, not the session.

Track a fixed prompt set monthly and record four things: whether you appear, whether the description is accurate, which page is cited, and which competitors appear beside you. Pair that with a “how did you hear about us” field on inbound leads. Traffic is a lagging, incomplete signal here.

How do I know whether I have a GEO problem at all?

Ask the engines the five questions your best customers ask before buying.

If your name does not appear, appears with the wrong description, or appears below competitors you outrank on Google, you have a GEO problem rather than an SEO one. It takes about ten minutes and needs no tooling — the prompts below are a starting point.

Try it yourself

Five prompts that tell you where you stand

Paste these into ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini with your own category and city. Read what comes back, and note which companies are named.

  • Who are the best [your category] companies in [your city]?
  • What should I look for when choosing a [your category] provider?
  • How much does [your service] typically cost?
  • Compare [your company] and [your closest competitor].
  • Is [your company] any good?
