Summary

A mention names your brand in an AI answer; a citation links a page as a source. Mentions shape what buyers remember, citations show where answers come from. Track both separately.

What is the difference between an AI mention and an AI citation?

A mention is your brand named in the text of an AI answer: "Consider Acme, Beta or Gamma." A citation is a page shown as a source for the answer, usually as a link or a source card. A brand can be mentioned without any of its pages being cited, and a page can be cited without the brand being recommended.

Why can they move in different directions?

Because they come from different mechanisms. A mention depends on whether the AI associates your brand with the question, which can come from training data and from many sources at once. A citation depends on which pages were retrieved and displayed for that answer.

Two common situations show the gap. A well-known brand is mentioned often but rarely cited, because the AI already knows it and cites reviews or comparisons instead. A useful guide on a smaller company's site is cited for a definition, while the answer recommends larger competitors. The first brand has presence without source authority. The second has source authority without presence.

Which one matters more for your business?

Mentions matter most when buyers use AI to build a shortlist, because being named is what gets you considered. Citations matter most when you want traffic and when you want to know which pages shape the answer. Most companies need both, so track them separately in the same review sheet.

Platforms also differ. Muck Rack's research reported that ChatGPT cited sources in most responses while Claude cited less often, so the citation picture changes by assistant. Treat each one as a separate channel; see why AI visibility is not one channel.

How do you track both in one sheet?

Use one row per answer and record both lists.

FieldExample
Prompt and assistant"Best CRM for real estate teams", ChatGPT
Date and runOctober 5, run 2 of 3
Brands mentionedBrand A, You, Brand C
Your mention context"A simpler option for small teams"
Sources citedg2.com, yoursite.com/real-estate, brandA.com
Your pages cited/real-estate

The example is illustrative. From this you can calculate your mention rate, your citation rate and which third-party domains are cited most often in your category. Those domains are where independent coverage helps most. The AI citation tracking guide goes deeper on citations.

How do you improve each one?

To earn more mentions, strengthen the association between your brand and the question across the web: clear positioning on your site, consistent profiles and independent coverage. See does PR improve AI visibility?.

To earn more citations, publish pages that answer specific questions directly, with dates, data and plain language. Answer-first pages are easier to retrieve and quote.
