Summary

Independent coverage is one of the sources AI assistants cite most. Research links branded web mentions with AI visibility. Plan PR around specific, verifiable stories that independent sites want to publish.

Does PR improve AI visibility?

The evidence points that way, with caveats. Muck Rack's "What Is AI Reading?" research, which analysed links cited by AI models, reported that the large majority of citations came from earned, non-paid sources, with journalism the largest single category. Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands found that branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with AI Overview visibility among the factors it tested, ahead of backlinks.

Both are observational studies. They show association, not proof that a given article will change a given answer. But together they suggest that being discussed by independent sources is one of the strongest levers available.

Why would AI assistants favour earned media?

Independent coverage gives AI systems what owned pages cannot: a third party confirming who you are and what you do. When several unrelated sources describe a brand the same way, that description is easier for an assistant to repeat with confidence. Paid placements carry less of that signal; Muck Rack reported paid and advertorial content as a very small share of citations.

What kind of PR helps most?

Coverage that is specific, accurate and on topic for the questions buyers ask.

Type of coverageWhy it helpsExample
Industry publicationsTrusted sources in your categoryA trade journal feature on your method
Data and researchQuotable facts journalists reuseAn original survey with a clear finding
Expert commentaryAssociates a person and brand with a topicA founder quoted in a news analysis
Customer storiesIndependent proof of resultsA client's own blog or case study
Podcasts and talksTranscripts and show notes describe youAn interview page with a clear summary

Generic press releases distributed to hundreds of sites are less useful. They repeat your own wording and rarely become the sources AI cites.

How do you plan PR for AI visibility?

Start from the questions, not the headlines.

1. List the buyer questions where you want to appear; use the competitor gap analysis. 2. Check which domains AI cites for those questions. 3. Target those publications and adjacent ones with stories that address the question. 4. Make sure every piece uses your exact name, a consistent one-line description and a link to your site. 5. Keep a coverage log and recheck the related questions monthly.

What should you avoid?

Avoid paying for undisclosed placements, mass-produced "best of" lists on low-quality sites and claims you cannot support. They can mislead buyers, risk your reputation and may be ignored or discounted by AI systems. Accurate, verifiable stories serve buyers and AI answers alike; see why public proof beats more content.

For new companies, PR is part of becoming recognisable at all: why doesn't ChatGPT know my brand?. For founders, see founder AI visibility.
